Katy (Texas) becoming the first Texas team to win nine state titles fell short on Saturday in wet and cold conditions at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio.
The hopes of
Lake Travis (Austin) hopes of winning a seventh state crown is still alive after an impressive 28-14 victory in a 6A-D1 semifinal game.
It was the first loss of the season after 12 straight wins for Katy, which was trying to make its 15th appearance in the state finals.
A 26-yard touchdown pass from
Matthew Baldwin to
Kyle Wakefield just before halftime gave Lake Travis a 21-7 lead, one it would not relinquish.
The 23rd-ranked Cavaliers (13-2) will play fourth-ranked
Allen, a 28-7 winner over Cedar Ridge (Round Rock) in next week's state finals.
Garrett Wilson gave Lake Travis a 7-0 lead with a 2-yard touchdown run, before
Deondrick Glass tied it with a 15-yard run. He had 128 rushing yards by halftime.
Lake Travis took a 14-7 lead on a trick play, when
Hudson Card completed a 43-yard touchdown pass to Wilson. Katy fumbled on its next possession and Baldwin, an Ohio State commit, made them pay with his TD pass to Wakefield.
Katy closed to 21-14 in the third quarter on a 3-yard touchdown pass from
Austin Marshall to
Jacob Lighter. It capped a 91-yard drive but chewed up much of the third quarter.
Baldwin went out of the game with an injury, but Wilson fired a touchdown pass to Card, making it 28-14 with 9:15 left in the game.
That closed the scoring and the season for Katy.
