Myth: Breast Surgery Prevents Breastfeeding

A common concern we hear from women is whether or not they’ll be able to breastfeed after having breast implants placed. While unfortunately there is no solid guarantee that you will be able to breastfeed, the vast majority of women who undergo breast augmentation surgery are able to breastfeed fine afterwards.

A major factor affecting the ability to breastfeed is the incision placement. There are a variety of incision placement options available, including:

  • In the armpit
  • In the crease under the breast
  • Around the areola
  • Through the navel

If your incision is around the areola, your chances of having problems breastfeeding increase, as it is easier to disturb the milk glands. However, if your incisions are under the breasts, the chances are much lower for breastfeeding problems. If your implants are placed under the muscle, that further lowers the chances of having breastfeeding problems.

Myth: Breast Augmentation Surgery Causes Lack of Nipple Sensation

Again, this is a common concern among women contemplating breast surgery. Permanent loss of nipple sensation is rare when your surgery is done by a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon. While it can happen in some cases, especially with areolar incisions, most women regain sensation in the nipple if it is temporarily lost after surgery.

If you are concerned about this happening, discuss your fears with Dr. Ali or Dr. Tamir during your consultation. They can explain in detail what to expect after surgery and if you are at risk for nipple sensation loss.

Myth: Breast Implants and Breast Lift Are the Same

Breast augmentation with implants and a breast lift are different procedures that serve different purposes. While in some cases breast implants can perk up a breast that is slightly sagging, if you have significant sagging of the breasts, you will likely need a full breast lift procedure.

Breast lifts and breast augmentation can be done at the same time if so desired. A breast lift plus breast implants can not only lift the breasts, but also add fullness, symmetry, and projection. This is a popular option for many women suffering from deflated, sagging breasts.
