The quarterback position for the Florida Gators has been a revolving door since Tim Tebow left Gainesville and that’s something Dan Mullen is going to have to fix in order to get Florida back to where it wants to be.
On Monday night, Mullen offered 2019 quarterback Jalon Jones (6-3, 180, Baltimore, MD. St. Frances Academy) after he decomitted from Mississippi State following Mullen’s departure.
“Coach Mullen was the one that offered,” Jones said on which coach from Florida offered him. “I knew it was coming and he knew that I knew it was coming because me and Coach Mullen have a really great relationship. That’s what made me initially commit to Mississippi State over the summer so we just had a good conversation about Florida.”
Mullen got straight to the point with Jones on Monday night when he offered him a scholarship.
“I called him and he was like that really isn’t much that I haven’t said before because you know you’re my guy,” he said on Mullen’s message to him. “He said that he loved what I do on the field and that he wanted to offer me a scholarship to come to Florida.”
Despite Jones being a one time Mississippi State commit, the quarterback has been waiting on an offer from Florida.
“It’s great, Florida has always been a top school for me and Florida is actually my dream school,” Jones said on what the offer means to him. “The first game that I actually watched was the Alabama/Florida SEC championship with Tim Tebow. I’ve just always loved Florida.”
Jones and Mullen’s relationship dates back over a year now and the quarterback described the Gators head coach as a family man.
“He’s down to earth and just a really good guy,” he said on Dan Mullen. “When he was first recruiting me to Mississippi State, his phone wasn’t working so he gave his wife’s number so I called her number to talk to him and actually had a good long talk with her too one day. I just love how he’s a family guy.”
The 2019 prospect knows about Florida’s struggles at the quarterback position and that’s something that has caught Jones’ attention.
“Yes, definitely and that’s a huge part of the decision process,” Jones said on if Mullen told him about the need for a quarterback at Florida. “He told me that they need someone to make an impact at quarterback.”
After decommitting, Jones is looking to get out and see new places including seeing Florida and Mullen.
“I’m going to take some visits this spring, Florida is definitely going to be one of the trips that I’m going to take,” he said. “I’ve got a bunch of trips that I’m actually right now.”
Jones plans to take those trips but he’s letting his commitment taken care of itself as to when he will make a decision.
“It’s just going to take care of itself,” Jones said on when he wants to decide. “If it happens later than it happens. Just whenever it feels right.
The Gators aren’t the only team after the quarterback as several big name schools are also after Jones.
“Clemson has been hitting me up a lot, Virginia Tech, Michigan, Michigan State and North Carolina State too,” he said on other schools recruiting him hard lately.
