Black Panther international trailer sets up a fight for the throne

Let the games begin

A Japanese trailer for Disney and Marvel Studios’ upcoming Black Panther expands on the rivalry between T’Challa and Erik Killmonger.

The trailer, which can be seen in the tweet below, sets up the battle for the throne. Killmonger is a Wakandan citizen who doesn’t believe T’Challa has the strength to lead Wakanda and defend it from the outside world. With an impending attack threatening the Golden City, Killmonger wants to take a more aggressive approach to quarantining the town: annihilating Wakanda’s enemies before the nation needs to defend itself.

T’Challa, better known as Black Panther, doesn’t share Killmonger’s emotional stance, and instead chooses to try a more diplomatic approach. Stepping into the shoes of his late father, who died after an explosion in Captain America: Civil War, T’Challa is primarily concerned about protecting Wakanda. That means working with other heroes and government agencies — something that Killmonger is against.

We know that Killmonger, whose actual name is N’Jadaka, previously competed as an exiled outsider for the Wakandan throne. He resented T’Challa after everything happened, and we can see that hatred carried through in the movie.

Michael B. Jordan, who plays Killmonger in the movie, told Entertainment Weekly that his character’s relationship with T’Challa was akin to Magneto’s relationship with Professor Charles Xavier in X-Men, but couldn’t hint at anything else.

There are a couple of additional new scenes in the trailer of Wakanda and its citizens, but the key scenes take place between T’Challa and Killmonger.

Black Panther will be released on Feb. 16, 2018.
