Heisman Trophy awarded to Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield
Baker Mayfield was awarded the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night at the PlayStation Theater in Manhattan. The brash, flag-planting Sooners star won a lopsided vote to become the sixth Oklahoma player to the win Heisman.Stanford running back Bryce Love was the runner-up, making it five second-place finishes for the Cardinal since 2009. Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson, last year's Heisman winner, was third, the best finish by a returning winner since Tim Tebow of Florida in 2008.Mayfield is the third player to win the Heisman heading to the College Football Playoff. The second-ranked Sooners meet No. 3 Georgia in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1. He is the first senior to win the award since Troy Smith of Ohio State in 2006.The Austin, Texas, native began his college career as a walk-on at Texas Tech in 2013. He eventually was injured, fell into a quarterback competition and decided to leave and walk on at Oklahoma. He lost a year of eligibility for transferring within the Big 12 and sat out a year. Once he became eligible at Oklahoma in 2015, he won the starting job over incumbent Trevor Knight. He later regained the year of eligibility when the Big 12 changed its rules regarding transfers who didn't have a written pledge of a scholarship from the previous school.This season, Mayfield has passed for 4,340 yards with 41 touchdowns and just five interceptions, and he has rushed for 310 yards and five more scores. Mayfield is the first FBS player to pass for more than 14,000 yards and rush for more than 1,000 in a career. He finished fourth in the Heisman balloting in 2015 and third last year. The quarterback was arrested in February and pleaded guilty to three misdemeanors, including public intoxication. He was also punished by Sooners coach Lincoln Riley after making an obscene gesture toward Kansas players during a game in November.The Associated Press contributed to this report.
