Dr Subbarao Krishnamurthy, the former Mysore captain, passed away at the age of 79 on Thursday (December 7).

The wicketkeeper-batsman was born on October 26, 1938 and played his maiden first class match (three-day game) for Mysore against Ceylon XI in March 1958, scoring 26 and zero.

He then made his Ranji Trophy debut versus Hyderabad in November 1959. He went on to play 32 first-class games, compiling 1336 runs and effecting 45 dismissals. He also captained the state side.

Post retirement, Krishnamurthy served as a vice-president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association and for a while held the post of chairman of the selection committee.

The Karnataka team paid their respects to Dr. Krishnamurthy by observing a minute's silence before start of play on Day I of their ongoing Ranji Trophy quarterfinal against Mumbai.
