Safe Halloween Candy Substitutes

How can you resist buckets of candy on Halloween? It’s not easy, but it’s necessary to do in order to maintain your oral health. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to satisfy your sweet tooth without having to eat any candy at all!

Why is Candy Bad for Teeth?

Halloween is the day for candy, but eating too much of it can have a detrimental impact on your teeth. Ever wondered why candy causes cavities? Acid can wear down the enamel that protects your teeth, and sugar is highly acidic. If cavities are not treated in time, you’ll have to deal with tooth decay.

1. Fruit

There’s nothing like fresh fruit for a sweet pick-me-up. You don’t have to eat them plain, either: Sliced apple with peanut butter, frozen grapes, and strawberries dipped in dark chocolate are all healthier, delicious ways to get your vitamins without the sugar crash that eating candy gives you.

2. Trail Mix

Make your own healthy trail mix with a variety of nuts, dark chocolate, pumpkin seeds, and a little dried fruit. Don’t overdo it on the last part, because dried fruit is full of sugar and can stick to your teeth, which can be just as bad for your teeth as regular candy.

3. Organic Fruit Snacks

Yes, organic fruit snacks exist! Free of additives and dyes, these are better alternatives to candy, although they’re not necessarily sugar-free. Have them in moderation!

4. Dark Chocolate

A couple of pieces of high-quality, dark chocolate are actually known for being good for your heart health. Its reduced sugar content makes it a tooth-safe snack as well!

5. Toys

Don’t want to give out sugary candies to trick-or-treaters this year? Opt for handing out small toys, like stickers or bouncy balls. Your trick-or-treaters will leave your house smiling without the sugar rush!

6. Practice Moderation

Eating candy is inevitable this time of year, so remember to just do so in moderation. Try to limit the amount of candy you and your children eat on a given day and make sure to brush and floss!

Getting a dental cleaning and exam every six months is a surefire way to check that your teeth are healthy and free of cavities. Our team at Ace Dental is happy to see you!
