MIDDLE BASS ISLAND - Seven people were rescued in Western Lake Erie near Middle Bass Island last weekend when a 28-foot vessel was severely listing in shallow water on Buckeye Reef.

At around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Coast Guard Sector Detroit was notified of a vessel at the bottom of shallow water and that one adult was having a panic attack, according to a Coast Guard report.

Five adults and two children were aboard the vessel and crews from Coast Guard Station Marblehead responded. A 25-foot boat and a commercial salvage crew were dispatched to assist the family.

Because of the shallow water depth, rescue crews were unable to approach the vessel and a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter was deployed to rescue the family.

The adults and children were taken by helicopter to Middle Bass Municipal Airport and were evaluated by emergency personnel.

There were no injuries reported.
