Over the past few years PTP has experimented with several donation methods to help keep the site online. As each payment provider gave us the boot or no longer became viable, we were forced to seek out other options. Cryptocurrency has proven to be the only long-term donation method that's stable and brings the least amount of risk to the site's owners. Unfortunately, we've fallen short on reaching our goals on multiple occasions. As much as we hate to ask our users repeatedly for support, we would simply be forced to close otherwise.

We are trialing a new method that involves mining Monero. The technology is experimental but is quickly being adopted by many sites that have no direct form of revenue. It is (and will remain) completely opt-in and controlled by the user. As a form of monetary value, mining is horribly inefficient but can provide a substantial yield given enough miners. Some users have expressed concern that the BP reward for mining amounts to buying upload credit. While the details of how PTP actually receives any monetary return from mining are entirely probabilistic (given the size of the block reward, the pool size and a host of other dynamic factors), we created Bonus Points as currency for the site to do a lot more than simply be used for upload, and we've been careful to set the reward as to not impact the ratio economy. It will not be a viable method to get by on the site for most, and is merely an incentive to keep miners online. As implied by the name, it is quite simply, a bonus.
