It’s a little face and a sad story that has touched the hearts of so many people across Oklahoma and the country.
“We’ve received calls today and emails from people in Oklahoma and all over the country who want to adopt this baby,” said Sheree Powell, with the Department of Human Services.
A 4-week-old boy was found Saturday by a church group driving along a busy Interstate 40 near Triple X Road. His mother has been located, and the Oklahoma County district attorney will determine if she will be charged.
Powell said the outpouring of love and compassion for the infant is bringing attention to the need for more foster and adoptive families in the state.
“We’re hoping to direct families today on how to find information about becoming a foster parent,” she said.
Roughly 9,500 children are in foster care, and the Department of Human Services is looking for families willing to take in children with special needs.
“We can equip a foster family and train them and support them in caring for that child,” Powell said. “We just need families who are willing to take children with special needs.”
DHS receives children every day on an emergency basis, Powell said. She hopes anyone who wanted to give the 4-week-old boy a loving home will consider DHS children.
“Hopefully people’s passion will continue and they will follow through with that,” Powell said.
