This is a toothache sweet romance. The relationship between Hilton, a billionaire CEO, and Cathal, his head of security, is pure fantasy fiction – until Cathal has to return home to Montana to deal with family drama. From that point on we get a little bit of angst and a whole lot of domestic bliss.

The connection between Cathal and Hilton has been five years in the making but somehow, this still feels like insta-love as the two men move from flirtation to co-parenting in the space of a few days. As with all billionaire romances, this story pushes the boundaries of plausibility as Hilton manages to drop everything in New York to be with Cathal in Montana. To a British reader, Hilton’s British background isn’t terribly convincing and I found the inconsistencies irritating. Cathal’s family situation is heartbreaking but everything is more domestic than sexy.

For me, the domestic part of the story was a complete turnoff. As soon as Cathal and Hilton start to figure things out together, they are surrounded by four children. Sure, the kids are cute and the men’s domestic experiences are realistic, but I don’t read billionaire romances for realism. Cathal and Hilton sneak around like teenagers – or parents – having muffled sex before immediately pulling sweats on so small children can get into bed with them. Not sexy. Not at all sexy.

T.A. Chase was one of the first authors to get me hooked on m/m romance but this is the first of her books that I’ve read in some time. As a fan, I was surprised by the choppy ‘tell not show’ writing style and frustrated with some grammatical errors that I hope will be fixed before the final release date.

I really enjoyed this book. Cathal and Hilton have liked each other from afar for years and when Cathal has to leave town to tend to his sick dad, Hilton bends over backwards to make sure he has everything he might need. I loved the kids in the book and I loved how Hilton just did everything he could for Cathal without being too over the top since he has a ton of money. When Hilton and Cathal are in the Walmart I was laughing so hard. I can imagine the looks he was getting never having been in a Walmart before. These two guys are perfect together and they worked so well and just meshed together like peanut butter and jelly. I enjoyed the story and read it all in one day.

This is part of a series with linked titles, but reads well as a standalone too.

This romance involves two very independent, intelligent, and straight forward men. At least they are that in all except their deep and long-standing attraction for each other. They have been avoiding all closeness and familiarity for five years. Suddenly, due to Cathal having to return to his hometown to help his sick father, they can't get wait to admit their feelings to each other. Maybe this is because for the first time ever, Cathal actually needs something that Hilton can provide, or whether Cathal's demeanour indicates it would be accepted, isn't really clear. Whatever the reason, they then fall headlong into domesticity, with a side serving of passion, when there is a moment.

I found I was trying to justify how they could undergo such a dramatic change of pace so quickly and decided that maybe as older guys, they realised that this was the time to settle down, but it was a bit stilted for me. Even with the unexpected level of understanding from Cathal's father, and the discovery of who caused Hilton's parents' air crash, it was precipitous. And whilst Hilton's money could solve anything, I am not sure that a bodyguard can really work from such a distance effectively, but it gave us the chance to watch the family traumas be resolved.

A more gritty than fairytale romance, with a lot of side issues which muddy the water, but result in a happily ever after for the whole McKinley-Burke clan.
