Employer fined for wage offences and default on Labour Tribunal Award
*********************************************************************
Poshtanga Limited was prosecuted by the Labour Department (LD) for committing wage offences and defaulting on the sum awarded by the Labour Tribunal (LT) under the Employment Ordinance (EO). The employer was found guilty today (September 6) at Eastern Magistrates' Courts and was fined $57,000. The employer was also ordered by the court to clear the outstanding sum of $27,500 to one employee.

The employer failed to pay wages to one employee within seven days after the expiry of the wage periods and termination of employment, as required by the EO. Also, the employer failed to pay the employee the awarded sum of $27,500 within 14 days after the payment date specified in the LT award.

"The ruling helps disseminate a strong message to all employers that they have to pay wages and the awarded sums according to the terms of the awards issued by LT to employees in accordance with EO," a spokesman for LD said.

"We do not tolerate the above offences and will continue to make dedicated efforts in enforcing the EO and safeguarding employees' statutory rights," the spokesman added.
