Memorial service for Sen. Jim Whelan to be held at Boardwalk Hall

A memorial service for state Sen. Jim Whelan, who died Tuesday of a heart attack at the age of 68, will be held Sept. 14 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

The family will receive guests beginning at 10 a.m. with the service beginning at 11:30 a.m., according to a post on his Facebook page.

Elected officials, community and university leaders, and friends are scheduled to speak.

Whelan, D-Atlantic, died Tuesday shortly before he was to be interviewed for a documentary on Atlantic City.

After undergoing surgery last month to remove a cancerous growth on his kidney, Whelan was expected to make a full recovery, according to his office. He then was readmitted to the hospital for complications from blood thinners.

Whelan planned to retire in January at the end of his third term in the state Senate. He also served Atlantic City as a lifeguard, school teacher, city councilman and mayor.

Donations may be made to any charity in Whelan's memory or sent to the Stockton University Foundation at 101 Vera King Farris Drive, Galloway, NJ 08205 with "In Memory of Jim Whelan" written in the note section. Donations also can be made online at
