Conservatives blaming the Left because President Donald Trump isn’t very popular need to get a firm grasp on this reality: Republicans are not impressed with Trump, and manage to say much more damaging things about Trump than the Left. After all, criticizing, back-seat driving, and demoralizing are finely honed skills within the Republican Party after eight years of playing obstructionists no matter what.
“It’s just frustrating to be constantly reacting to his sh*t,†a GOP Senate aide is quoted as saying in the Independent Journal Review.
“The president has torched whatever political capital or moral authority he ever had,†a GOP aide reportedly told the IJR. “He is uniquely incapable of political leadership. If we get tax reform done, it won’t be with his help. It’ll be in spite of him and his vortex of incompetence and destruction.â€
It’s better for Republicans if the President chases his tail after his imaginary huge victory or the imaginary millions of illegal voters, because as soon as Trump gets involved in legislation, its chances plunge.

“The more distracted [Trump] is tweeting about Mika [Brzezinski] or his historic victory or the 4 million illegal votes, the better the odds are that we get tax reform. If he gets interested in tax reform, it will probably die just like everything else he touches,†the Republican aide added, according to Haley Byrd writing in the IJR.
Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) just questioned Trump’s mental state and competence.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s former Chief of Staff and campaign manager Josh Holmes also unloaded on Trump, saying his attacks on Republicans invite them to abandon Trump:

(Note: Holmes’ hopeful suggestion that ten years ago people would have thought Trump was a Democrat elected to help the South to rise again exemplifies how desperate Republicans are to toss Trump to the Democrats since he stinks so badly. But it is not the Democratic base who worship Donald Trump and his racism, nor would they have ten years ago.)
Republicans are fed up with Donald Trump because he is interfering with their ability to pass legislation and he is making things awkward for them politically.
As a whole, the Republican Party is being defined by Donald Trump because 2/3 of their base agree with Trump on neo-Nazis and white supremacists. This isn’t good for the party, because of increasing diversity within the U.S. Republicans know this, and that is why they were tiptoeing around the ugliness of Trump.
That doesn’t mean Republicans think Trump is competent, sane, or fit for the office.
Donald Trump, the vortex of incompetence and destruction, per a Republican aide. A growing number of Republicans are no longer afraid of Trump, which won’t go well for the President, given his base’s need to see him as Big Daddy/Alpha Male. His own party doesn’t respect him, eight months in.
