Humane Society holding 'shoe drive' fundraiser

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP - The Humane Society of Ottawa County is holding a “shoe drive” fundraiser through donations of gently worn footwear.

Many types of footwear will be accepted, including shoes, sneakers, flip flops, sandals, boots, and slippers.

These can be dropped off now through September 30 at the Humane Society of Ottawa County, 2424 Sand Rd. in Portage Township, or at the following sites: Kroger in Port Clinton, Ace Hardware, Catawba Clean Scene; IGA Community Market in Oak Harbor; and Mutach’s Market in Marblehead.

All the donated shoes will be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of small-business partners. Funds2Orgs works with small business in developing nations, helping them create and maintain jobs.

The shoes are refurbished and sold with the proceeds going to feed, clothe and house their families.

One family in Haiti even earned enough money to send her son to law school.

“We are excited about our shoe drive,” said Lesa Heredia, shelter manager. “We know that most people have extra shoes in their closets they would like to donate to us. By doing so, we raise money for the Humane Society and we have a chance to help families in developing nations who need economic opportunities. It's a win-win for everyone.”

For questions, contact Lesa Heredia at the Humane Society, 419-734-5191.

Port Clinton schools hire director of innovation and instruction

PORT CLINTON - The Port Clinton City School District has hired Kelly Croy as new director of innovation and instruction. Croy will be responsible for overseeing the curriculum plan for the district.

According to officials, this will include providing leadership and direction in the pursuit of innovative instructional strategies. Jack Nitz, director of student services, will continue overseeing the mandated state testing processes and data systems.

Officials said Kelly Croy was a natural selection for the position as he has received designation as a PBS Innovator, Google Certified Innovator, and Apple Distinguished Educator. All three designations were due to his use of technology integration in the classroom and teaching expertise.

He hosts a weekly educational podcast, “The Wired Educator,” focusing on helping educators “level-up” and make a difference in the lives of students. He also is an author for several curriculum content and professional learning resources.

“Having Kelly on board is exciting for us,” said Superintendent Pat Adkins. “Not only does he have a strong background in innovative teaching strategies he has a very solid understanding of instructional techniques that engage students.”

Croy comes to Port Clinton from Benton-Carroll-Salem, where he was a middle school English teacher for 26 years.
