TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Are you stressed out, frustrated or anxious at work? Researchers say that playing video games can help to relieve those problems.
A study shows that people who play video games exhibit a greater affective recovery compared to normal relaxation condition. Playing video games restores one’s affective ability and thus making it a good activity to restore mood as a response to stress.
Furthermore, people who rest or relax without doing any activities, in particular, reported that they did not feel fully engaged in their work and it causes concerns.
"People have to make time to rest and perform fun and exciting activities, such as playing video games, that can help to recharge their energy," Doctoral student of the University of Central Florida Michael Rupp said.
This study was published in Human Factors: Journal of Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. Rupp and his team used computer based exercises to result in cognitive fatigue to 66 participants, who were later given a 5-minute break. During the break, they played Sushi Cat video game or just sat in the testing room without using a phone or a computer.
In different periods during the study, the researchers measured the participants’ emotion including stress level, mood, and their cognitive work performance.
