Prep notebook: WSBCA announces all-state baseball teams

Local baseball players were well-represented on the Washington State Baseball Coaches Association’s all-state teams.

The Glacier Peak senior trio of shortstop Ryan Ober and outfielders Colton Bunt and Ethan Smith were named to the Class 4A all-state team after helping lead the Grizzlies to the first round of the 4A state tournament. Bunt hit eight home runs this past season, Smith posted a .485 batting average and the Oregon State-bound Ober batted .441.

Edmonds-Woodway seniors Brandon Mitchell and Nick Hull received 3A all-state honors after helping the Warriors to a fourth-place state finish.

Shorewood senior pitchers Will Smith and Tanner Oxnevad, who formed a one-two punch that helped the Thunderbirds to the first round of the 3A state tournament, also garnered all-state recognition. Smith posted a 0.52 ERA with 79 strikeouts in 54 innings, while Oxnevad recorded a 0.57 ERA.

Lynnwood senior shortstop Kyler McMahan and Arlington senior pitcher/catcher Tristan Sheward rounded out the local 3A all-state selections. McMahan, an Oregon State commit, batted .479. Sheward batted .348, posted a 1.47 ERA and helped the Eagles to the 3A state quarterfinals.

Lynnwood softball star selected for nationally televised All-American game

Lynnwood High School softball standout and University of Alabama-bound Maddie Morgan has been selected to compete in Friday’s nationally televised Premier Girls Fastpitch High School All-American Game in Irvine, California.

The game features 47 of the nation’s top graduated seniors and will be broadcast live at 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU. Morgan, listed as a utility player on the West team’s roster, was the only player selected from the state of Washington.

Morgan, The Herald’s 2017 Softball Player of the Year, capped her sensational Lynnwood career this spring by batting .712 with five home runs, two triples and 16 doubles — totaling 23 extra-base hits in 52 at-bats. The lefty-hitting shortstop will continue her career at Alabama after committing to the powerhouse Crimson Tide program in ninth grade.
