Tencent Arrives in Interxion Frankfurt

July 24th, 2017 by · Leave a Comment

Tencent Cloud is landing in Europe. The cloud division of the Chinese technology powerhouse Tencent has decided to establish its first hub on the continent at Interxion’s Frankfurt campus.

Tencent has been rapidly building out a global cloud infrastructure since 2014, and just this past April opened for business in Silicon Valley. It won’t be the last stop either, as the company says it is building six new regions and 15 zones this year, reaching 34 zones globally.  Also on the menu are said to be Mumbai, Seoul, and Moscow.

Tencent’s empire includes the widespread QQ and WeChat platforms as well as various online games, and in China they have a finger in just about every new technology pot. Whether that means they can sustain a challenge to global cloud infrastructure providers such as Amazon and Google is another matter of course. But like Alibaba, they are certainly gearing up to try.

At Interxion, Tencent gains access to DE-CIX where it can smoothly interconnect with most of Europe’s network.
