You might be surprised to learn that indoor pollution can be a major cause of allergies. There is not much you can do when it comes to some buildings. Fortunately, though, there are concrete things you can do to help reduce the allergens that are present in your home.

1.      Keep Moisture Under Control
Mold thrives in moist environments. Dust mites love it when your home is humid. Keep these two top allergens at bay by keeping the humidity between 30 and 50 percent inside your home. This can be accomplished with your air conditioning system in the summer as long as it is set low enough. In the winter time, you might need a dehumidifier to help maintain the right levels.

2.      Vacuum Your Floors Regularly
Did you know that your household dust can contain decades worth of allergens and chemicals? Cleaning your floors on a regular basis helps keep this allergen harboring substance to a minimum. When vacuuming, use a HEPA filter to rid your home of airborne toxins and allergens like pollen, dust mites, pet dander and brominated fire-retardant chemicals (PBDEs).

3.      Consider Replacing Carpet
If you have carpeting in your home, you might be harboring thousands of different types of toxins and allergens without even being aware of it. No matter how often and well you vacuum, there is likely to be some residue left behind. This is especially true if you rent your home or the carpet is older. Instead of trying fruitlessly to vacuum and clean your old and worn carpet, consider replacing it with beautiful, allergen free wood floors.

4.      Mop Regularly
Mopping picks up allergens, dust, and debris that vacuuming leaves behind. Unless your floor is also dirty, you can even skip the cleaners and just wet mop it. Another option is to use a microfiber mop. Not only do they not require any cleaning solutions in order to be effective they also capture more allergens, dirt and dust than traditional wet mopping.

5.      Trap It
Place a floor mat on the inside and outside of every door in your home. Encourage everyone to use the floor mat before they enter your house, then wipe their feet once again when they come inside. You can also make a no shoe rule in your home to prevent allergens from getting a ride into your house.
