3 from Greenwood dead in fatal 5-vehicle bus crash near Bloomington
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - A bus crash north of Bloomington killed two women and a man Saturday, Fox59 reported.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Department confirms it happened near Business 37 and Bayles Rd. First responders were called shortly before 2 p.m.
Police say a Miller passenger bus, contracted by Greyhound, hit a van and three of its occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. They were later identified as 54-year-old Rose Pettus, 30-year-old Shante Lewis and 30-year-old Orlando Lewis Jr., all from Greenwood.
The bus was moving at full speed when it made impact, according to police. Five vehicles were reportedly involved in the crash.
A small child in the van reportedly survived and was transported to an area hospital. Police say the child has non-life threatening injuries.
There was reportedly construction in the area and the bus rammed into stopped traffic.
Miller Transportation sent Fox59 this statement about the crash:
“A tragic accident occurred today involving several vehicles, including a Miller Transportation Bus. The bus was headed from Chicago to Louisville when the accident took place in Bloomington, IN.
"Unfortunately, it appears there were fatalities as a result of this accident. We are greatly saddened for this loss of life and offer our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the families and all those impacted by this accident.
"We pledge our assistance in cooperating with local authorities in the investigation.”
