University of Canterbury Mt John Observatory is New Zealand’s only professional observatory for research in optical astronomy, founded in 1965 and now in its 52nd year. Lake Tekapo's spectacular, unpolluted night skies attract visitors from all over the world.

University of Canterbury Mt John Observatory on top of Mt John, near Lake Tekapo, provides outstanding conditions for observations and discoveries of the southern sky.

Visit the telescopes, talk to the astronomers about their work, see the instruments and computers they use, go to the Earth & Sky Astrocafé on Mt John for refreshments.

For the kids, “Space Crafts” will be in the room of the very first Observatory’s telescope. Join in, by painting an alien mask or designing your own planet. Earth & Sky Astronomy Guides will also show case daytime telescope observations if the weather permits.

Note: A Starlight Festival ticket must be shown at the gate to the private Mt John road in order for no road toll to be charged. The access to the Mt John road is from Godley Peaks Road from SH8; Godley Peaks Road is about 2 km west of Lake Tekapo village.

This event is part of the Aoraki Mackenzie Starlight Festival. The Festival, a biennial event, celebrates the creation of the southern hemisphere’s first International Dark Sky Reserve, in the Mackenzie Basin and at Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park in the centre of New Zealand’s South Island.
