American-Pakistani Muslim man, wife rose to prominence after denouncing Trump

The American-Pakistani Muslim and a Gold Star father of a slain U.S. Army Captain who was killed during the Iraq War was in Baltimore County on Wednesday to promote diversity.Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz hosted a regional rally with the aim to bring awareness to the importance of diversity and eradicating discrimination and hatred in communities locally and nationally.Kamenetz also recognized Khizr Khan with a special citation for using his voice to stand up and speak out for the Constitutional rights of immigrant communities. His son, Capt. Humayun Khan, was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart after he was killed in 2004 explosion in Iraq, saving the lives of his subordinates.Khizr Khan and his wife, Ghazala Khan, received national attention after speaking out against then-presidential candidate Donald Trump at the Democratic National Committee, holding up a pocket version of the U.S. Constitution. Trump responded negatively to the couple, while they received bipartisan support and support from many groups, including fellow Gold Star families, for their son's sacrifice.Kamenetz also proclaimed July 12 as Unity Day in Baltimore County.
