Frankie Dettori will not be celebrating any winners at Royal Ascot 2017 after withdrawing

The biggest race of the day went off at 4.20pm with the eight runners racing over seven furlongs and 213 yards for the St James’s Palace Stakes.

Last year's champion juvenile Churchill had made a brilliant start to his three-year-old campaign, winning both the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Irish equivalent at the Curragh for Aidan O'Brien but faded to fourth as Barney Roy sealed the victory.

The Ballydoyle handler also saddled Lancaster Bomber and Peace Envoy in Tuesday's Group One contest.

Barney Roy had been just a length behind Churchill on the Rowley Mile and sidestepped a trip to Ireland, with trainer Richard Hannon keen to ensure his charge was at his best in Berkshire this week.

And the move paid off as he romped to a famous win.

2.30pm: Queen Anne Stakes (1m; 16 runners)

Dutch Uncle led the pack out, jumping out to a five-length lead in the opening furlongs.

However, he was unable to hold off the field as they closed on the fast Ascot ground and Norwegian-born jockey William Buick brought the favourite home to become the first winner of Royal Ascot 2017.

1st Ribchester (11/10f), 2nd Mutakayyef (5/1), 3rd Deauville (12/1).

3.05pm: Coventry Stakes (6f; 18 runners)

A blanket finish saw Brother Bear, the pre-race 4/1 favourite, edged out by Murillo but it was Ireland's Rajasinghe who took the win at a big 11/1 price.

1st Rajasinghe (11/1), 2nd Headway (33/1), 3rd Murillo (8/1).

3.40pm: King’s Stand Stakes (5f; 17 runners)

Lady Aurelia's backers were nowhere to be seen after Frankie Dettori withdrew and Take Cover flew out in a fast start to lead after a furlong.

Having started as second favourite, Lady Aurelia kicked on with John Velazquez on board with half a furlong to go and no-one could stay with the pace.

1st Lady Aurelia (7/2), 2nd Profitable (14/1), 3rd Marsha (11/4f).

4.20pm: St James’s Palace Stakes (7f 213y; 8 runners)

The favourite Churchill failed to deliver as he slipped to fourth, allowing Godolphin pair Barney Roy and Thunder Snow to snatch first and third.

Lancaster Bomber came in second after going well but was pipped on the outside by Barney Roy.

1st Barney Roy (5/2), 2nd Lancaster Bomber (12/1), 3rd Thunder Snow (6/1)
