Listed below are the top five vote-getters in The Herald’s online voting contest for girls athlete of the year. Schools were asked to nominate a senior athlete based on athletic accomplishments and other aspects such as academics, community involvement and character.
1. Karlie Rimat, Stanwood — 409 votes (9.1 percent)
Rimat earned a pair of podium finishes at the 3A state swim meet, placing second in the 200-yard individual medley and seventh in the 500 freestyle. She also helped the Spartans’ 200 medley relay team qualify for state. Rimat holds school records in four different events and had a 3.9 grade-point average. She will continue her swimming career at McKendree University, a Division II school in Illinois.
2. Cassie Collinge, Granite Falls — 335 votes (7.4 percent)
Collinge was a second-team All-Cascade Conference forward in soccer and helped two Tigers relay teams advance to the finals at the 2A state track and field meet, where she contributed to a sixth-place finish in the 4×400 relay. She was Granite Falls’ senior class president and valedictorian (3.99 GPA) and helped organize the school’s annual holiday food and gift drive.
3. Paisley Johnson, Glacier Peak — 322 votes (7.1 percent)
Johnson, a Brigham Young University signee, was a first-team Herald All-Area basketball selection who averaged 15.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.6 steals per game for the 4A state runner-up Grizzlies. Johnson also was a member of the Glacier Peak volleyball team and carried a 3.4 GPA. She was involved in school leadership and has volunteered through her church in outreach programs for disadvantaged individuals.
4. Meredith Teague, Monroe — 310 votes (6.9 percent)
Teague, a Loyola Marymount University signee, was a first-team All-Wesco 4A selection in volleyball. The star outside hitter posted a .271 hitting percentage and totaled 281 kills while leading the Bearcats to the 4A state tournament. She also served as the school’s student body president and carried a high GPA.
5. Katie Brandvold, Snohomish — 292 votes (6.5 percent)
Brandvold, who finished her high school career with 12 varsity letters, placed 56th at the 3A state cross country meet and was a key contributor on the Panthers’ basketball and track and field teams. She has volunteered at youth golf clinics and assisted with trail maintenance at county parks while maintaining a 3.57 GPA.
