Elenbaas, Urvater win ESD Athlete of the Year honors

EVERETT — Cascade’s Jacob Elenbaas and Everett’s Marlena Urvater received the Dwayne Lane’s Athlete of the Year awards Thursday during the Everett School District Athletic Awards Night at Everett High School.

The annual event, which began in 1962 as the Walsh-Platt Athletic Banquet, honored student-athletes from each of the district’s three schools with various awards.

“We’re big believers in scholar-athletes,” district athletic director Robert Polk said. “And I think tonight you saw a great collection of what we talk about — to be strong in the classroom, to be strong in the community and, oh yeah, by the way, to be strong on the field of competition.

“And so that’s what we love about this program is it’s an opportunity to recognize the right things.”

Elenbaas and Urvater were selected from 12 nominees — four from each school — for the night’s most prestigious award. The two athlete of the year winners each received a $2,500 scholarship and an award plaque.

Elenbaas finished his high-school career with 11 varsity letters after being a four-year letterman in both swim and track and a three-year letterman in football. He was a captain on all three teams this year and helped Cascade’s 200-meter freestyle relay team advance to the state swim meet in February.

Elenbaas has a 3.81 cumulative grade-point average and plans to attend Central Washington University to pursue a bachelor’s degree.

Urvater, a two-year captain on Everett’s track and field team, placed 12th in the Class 3A state long jump last week. She finished her high-school career with seven varsity letters, earning four for track, two for basketball and one for cross country. She also played volleyball during her freshman and sophomore years. She moved to Everett after attending Libby High School in Montana for her freshman year.

Urvater has a 3.87 cumulative GPA and plans to attend the University of Washington to pursue a degree in biology and work toward her dream of becoming a physician.

The other nominees for the Dwayne Lane Athlete of the Year awards were: Edmund Havener (Everett), Murdock Rutledge (Everett), Siena Utt (Everett), Matthew Watkins (Jackson), Dartagnan Phan (Jackson), Kailey Castro (Jackson), Amelia Leong (Jackson), Corwin Guntermann (Cascade), Sara Thomas (Cascade) and Jessica Welch (Cascade).
