A former player is rejoining the Blues as a coach and it was not a name anyone would have foreseen either.

Ott will join the Blues as an assistant coach, effectively ending his playing career.



After a long playing career split between the Dallas Stars, Buffalo Sabres, St Louis Blues, Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens.

The St Louis Blues saw antagonistic depth forward Steve Ott skate out for the team from 2013 to 2016, deploying him in a predominantly bottom six role after losing fellow center Vladimir Sobotka to the KHL as a result.

After 848 games, veteran forward Steve Ott has retired from the NHL, the team announced Thursday.

The Blues acquired Ott from the Sabres in February 2014, and he spent parts of three seasons in St Louis.



Last off-season, the Blues made a number of changes, letting the likes of David Backes, Troy Brouwer and Steve Ott sign elsewhere as free agents, and elected to trade defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk this season after being unable to sign him to an extension.

In a bit of a surprise move to those on the outside but not so much to him, Steve Ott called it quits on a 14-year NHL career on Thursday to join the Blues as an assistant coach to Mike Yeo’s staff.

Ott appeared in 11 games for the Canadiens, and had one assist He also played in six playoff games without getting a point.

Ott had not even announced his retirement.
