A former University of Massachusetts Amherst graduate student charged with supplying a fatal dose of heroin to another student working as a police informant is getting underway. The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that opening statements in Jesse Carrillo's trial on involuntary manslaughter and heroin distribution charges are expected Wednesday. Authorities allege Carrillo, of Derry, New Hampshire, provided the heroin that caused Eric Sinacori's death in his off-campus apartment in October 2013. The 20-year-old Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, man had faced drug charges, but police agreed not to pursue his case if he cooperated as an informant. Sinacori's mother said the university should have told her of her son's drug use. UMass discontinued the program. Carrillo's attorney says his client is drug free and "looks forward to ending this part of his journey."
