State golf roundup: Stanwood’s Borseth co-leader after Day 1

RICHLAND — Quinton Borseth chose a great time to shoot his best round of the year.

The Stanwood Spartans senior fired a 4-under 68, tying him for the lead during the opening-round of the Class 3A boys state tournament Tuesday at Columbia Point Golf Course.

“Being on a big stage at state I think he just got laser focused and things worked out for him,” Stanwood coach Scott Bates said. “He has played well this season and has struggled at times, but I think with this being his last opportunity he is focused on making it happen.”

Borseth has improved every year since he was a freshman state alternate. His sophomore year he qualified for state but didn’t make the cut and last year he placed 17th. He’ll be looking to fend off Redmond’s Connor Golembeski, who also finished with a 68, as well as a host of other golfers during Wednesday’s final round.

While Bates said he spent much of Tuesday’s round watching and coaching his other Stanwood player, Cole Weiderstrom, the Spartans coach said Borseth told him he was automatic on short putts and didn’t leave many shots on the course.

Wednesday’s round should produce drastically different weather conditions than the 94 degrees and calm winds golfers faced Tuesday. Bates said temperatures are expected to drop 20 degrees and winds are predicted to rise, which will make low scores a greater challenge.

“He will have to be mentally ready, and if that shows up and he can be pretty consistent and doesn’t try to do too much, he should have a good round tomorrow,” Bates said.

Weiderstrom will also be playing Wednesday after finishing with a 77. Arlington teammates Connor Stephens (76) and Cody Oakes (77) and Everett duo Austin Duffy (73) and Josef Koznek (75) also made the cut, as did Snohomish’s Nolan Armbruster (76) and Shorecrest’s Alex Saunders (78).

LIBERTY LAKE — Kamiak’s Devin Kim, Alvin Kwak and Tanner Mohr made the cut during the first round of the Class 4A state tournament Tuesday at Liberty Lake Golf Course, keeping the Knights in contention for a team title when play resumes Wednesday.

Kim will also be chasing an individual title. The Kamiak sophomore fired a 68, ending day one tied for fourth place. He trails Olympia’s Riley Killip, the first-day leader, by two shots.

Kwak shot a 74, Mohr shot a 75 and Alex Kim registered an 81 and didn’t make the day-one cut of 77. Glacier Peak’s Tyler Spalti, who shot a 73 and finished tied for 17th, was the only other area golfer to make the cut. Jackson’s Jordan Brajcich (78) and Lake Stevens’ Josh Selby (80) and Jake Rasmussen (90) didn’t advance to day two.

Kim ended day one in a tie for 12th, shooting a 78, while teammate Vo shot an 80 and finished tied for 21st. Lundquist fired a 79, which tied her for 16th place. Glacier Peak’s Kiersten Lee (92) and Brenna Bullard (94), Kamiak’s Rachel Ponting (84) and Regina Park (90) and Jackson’s Serena Nguyen (97) didn’t advance to Wednesday’s final round.

KENNEWICK — Despite sending 17 local golfers to the Class 3A state tournament, the odds are long anyone will be bringing home an individual title at the conclusion of Wednesday’s final round at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick.

Teammates Matthew Pabisz (80) and Steve Shih (81) finished tied for 21st and 25th, respectively. Cedarcrest’s Steven VanValkenburg also shot an 80. Archbishop Murphy’s Fulton Brawner shot an 87, missing the cut of 84.
