BAL Starting Pitcher #49

Albert Suárez blanked the Angels for 5 2/3 innings in the Orioles’ 4-2 victory Monday.

Suárez won for the first time since June 23, 2016, when he outpitched the Pirates’ Jon Niese in a 5-3 victory for the Giants. It’s so long ago that no member of either team’s starting lineup is currently active in the majors (although both Starling Marte and Brandon Crawford did appear off the bench that day). Suárez got 16 missed swings tonight, half of them coming on his 94-mph fastball. He’s not guaranteed much additional time in the rotation with Kyle Bradish due back soon, but he should be a nice play if he gets to face the A’s on Sunday.
Craig Kimbrel

BAL Relief Pitcher #46

Craig Kimbrel moved past Billy Wagner on the all-time saves list with a scoreless ninth Monday against the Angels.

This was a classic post-peak Kimbrel outing; he hit Jo Adell with an 0-2 pitch, gave up a soft single and then walked a batter for the first time this year to load the bases with one out. At that point, he got Nolan Schanuel to pop out and struck out Mike Trout on four fastballs. His 423rd save leaves him alone in seventh place on the all-time list. His next will tie John Franco for sixth, and after that, he’ll keep battling it out with Kenley Jansen, who is two saves ahead of him at 425. Both should also pass Francisco Rodríguez at 437 this year.
Tarik Skubal

DET Starting Pitcher #29

Tarik Skubal picked up his third win on Monday night with nine strikeouts across six scoreless innings against the Rays.

This was by far Skubal’s best outing of the season. The 27-year-old southpaw is now 7-0 with an absurd 1.35 ERA dating back to last season. He has a 31.2% strikeout rate with 35 strikeouts across 29 2/3 innings. He’s clearly put himself as a potential AL Cy Young candidate with the way he’s been throwing on the bump.
Travis d'Arnaud

ATL Catcher #16

Travis d’Arnaud went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in the sixth inning to help lead the Braves over the Marlins, 3-0 on Monday.

d’Arnaud’s two-run shot was a huge lift for Atlanta who finished the game 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position. The 35-year-old backstop now has five home runs in his past four games, with three of them coming in one game against the Rangers on Saturday. d’Arnaud is putting together a career-best .980 OPS and 14 RBI in his 18 games played this season.
Dylan Cease

SD Starting Pitcher #84

Dylan Cease allowed one run and one hit over seven innings for the win Monday as the Padres topped the Rockies 3-1.

This was shaping up as a no-decision when Cease exited a 1-1 game, but the Padres scored twice in the top of the eighth to put him in line for the victory. Cease struck out eight and walked none in improving to 3-1 with a 1.82 ERA. He’ll face the Phillies next.
Jared Jones

PIT Starting Pitcher #37

Jared Jones punched out seven batters and allowed just one earned run in six innings against the Brewers on Monday.

Jones put together another spectacular performance as he retired the first eight batters he faced before giving up his first hit of the evening. The 22-year-old hurler has thrown at least seven strikeouts in all five of his starts this season. He’s now struck out 39 batters and allowed just four walks in his 29 innings pitched this season and making his case for a sneaky NL Rookie of the Year candidate.
Chris Paddack

MIN Starting Pitcher #20

Chris Paddack recorded 10 strikeouts over seven shutout innings on Monday in a win over the White Sox.

Paddack retired 10 consecutive batters to open the contest before giving up three consecutive one-out singles in the fourth inning. He managed to wriggle out of the jam completely unscathed, and wound up allowing just three additional baserunners over his final three frames, as Minnesota’s offense backed him with seven runs of support to pick up his first win of the year. He generated 16 swinging strikes and finished with a 32 percent CSW. It was his first double-digit strikeout performance since June 18, 2021. He’ll carry an inflated 5.57 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 19/5 K/BB ratio across 21 innings (four starts) into a road tilt on Saturday against the Angels.
Heston Kjerstad

BAL Left Fielder #13

Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles will recall outfielder Heston Kjerstad on Tuesday.

Kjerstad will get the call a day after the Orioles placed Austin Hays on the injured list. So far in 2024, the outfielder has been spectacular in Triple-A with a .349 average and 1.176 OPS along with 10 homers for Norfolk. Kjerstad may not get a chance to play against left-handed pitching, but those managers who are looking for a boost in power should absolutely consider Kjerstad for a roster spot.
Ranger Suarez

PHI Starting Pitcher #55

Ranger Suárez yielded just two hits and struck out five batters across seven innings of work during Monday’s 4-0 victory against the Reds.

Mr. Rager put together another stellar performance, this time on the road against the reputable offense in Cincinnati. The 28-year-old southpaw has thrown 25 consecutive scoreless innings and picked up his fourth win of the season, which is tied for the most in the majors. On the season, he has an absurd 1.36 ERA, 0.70 WHIP and a 32/5 K/BB ratio. The fact that Suárez is number three in the Phillies’ rotation is remarkable given the numbers he’s put together so far this year.
Bryan Woo

SEA Starting Pitcher #22

Bryan Woo (elbow) hurled three scoreless innings with five strikeouts in a rehab start for Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday.

Woo didn’t allow a hit and didn’t give up a walk. The right-hander was back on the mound for the first time since he was placed on the injured list just before Opening Day with elbow inflammation. The right-hander will need to make at least one more rehab start as he builds up his stamina, but this is obviously a step in the right direction.
