'Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' Review: Depp Is As Amusing As Ever

Patch caught the premiere of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" in Paris. The verdict? Find out.

Alas! Another swashbuckling adventure on the high seas with Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow — and this one sparkles as bright as his four gold teeth (of different carats).

“Dead Men Tell No Tales” is the fifth installment of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, and the saga continues with Captain Jack Sparrow searching for the legendary and magical “Trident of Poseidon.” Enter his longtime nemesis, Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and the ghostly revenge-seeking Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), who just escaped the hellish Devil’s Triangle. And this one treasure hunt becomes ginormous!

Remember Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), who has been doomed to skipper the “Dutchman” for eternity? Well, his son, Henry (Brenton Thwaites), all the while, is determined to break this curse more than ever. As the plot thickens, young Henry and Sparrow are paired up, along with an orphaned astronomer Carina (Kaya Scodelario), for the ride.

Depp is splendid, especially with his one-liners, which are as amusing as ever. Thwaites and Scodelario are impressive, showing spirit and screen presence, while Rush and Bardem are effective in their roles, to say the least.

Directed by Norwegian pair Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, “Dead Men Tell No Tales” (also known as “Salazar’s Revenge”) is a tale of fathers and their children. Whereas the storytelling of its last three predecessors was a bit disappointing, this new one shines with so much gusto. Plus, the film boasts exciting action sequences and magnificent set pieces, including the bank robbery, the parting of the sea and the ghost sharks.

So, has “Dead Men Tell No Tales” recaptured the magic of the first film, “The Curse of the Black Pearl?” Yes, it has, and it breathes new life into the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise. See it; tilt your “pirate” hat in tribute to this new movie gem.
