With Volvo dealers on the verge of getting the new XC60, Volvo has another small ute in the pipeline.
Our spy photographer got the first photos of the interior of the all-new XC40. It has the Sensus infotainment center screen dominating the center stack, and the cabin seems to have few buttons or switches.
One question about this model is whether the rear door window would have the same trapezoidal shape as the one on Volvo's 40.1 concept car. In the last spy shots we ran, it appeared maybe not, but that might've been a trick of the camo. And while that area remains camouflaged on this tester, take a look at the interior photo from the back seat. The upswept angular glass does seem to be there, along with a seam that indicates a large angular door opening. It would be a bold look, though the thick C pillar would create a significant blind spot, much like those present in so many other crossovers. Otherwise, expect the XC40, like the XC60, to look quite a bit like the XC90.
The XC40 will be built on Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) designed for small cars. Volvo has confirmed it will be available with a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder as the standard engine. A plug-in hybrid variation with that engine is an option. And Europe, at least, might get a four-cylinder diesel. The upcoming Volvo S40 sedan and V40 hatchback and Lynk & Co 01 Crossover will also share the CMA platform.
The XC40 will likely debut later this year with first sales starting in 2018. It will compete against the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Mercedes GLA.
