Waltham Student's Racially Charged Instagram Post Sparks Outrage: Report

Students held a peaceful protest at Waltham High School Monday over a senior's post about a student at the college she was attending.

WALTHAM, MA — A Waltham High School senior's racially charged social media post sparked outrage among students, who responded with a peaceful protest and sit-in at the school on Monday, according to a CBS Boston report. More than 600 students participated in the demonstration, which included conversations among students and between students and faculty.

Protesters were responding to an Instagram post last month by a senior who was planning to attend Curry College in the fall. The senior, who is white, used a racial epithet to describe another student at Curry after he supposedly asked her to move in with him. She suggested she was flattered by the offer and made a reference to "jungle fever."

The student was disciplined privately and is no longer expected to attend Curry College, CBS Boston reported. Waltham High School Principal Greg DeMeo told the network he was "proud" of how the students handled themselves in opening up a dialogue.
