Video: Myles Garrett draft previewTexas A&M and Arlington Martin High School product is 2017 top pick.Myles Garrett going No. 1 in the 2017 NFL Draft gives high schools in the state of Texas three top overall picks since 1990.
The new Cleveland Brown joins quarterbacks Matthew Stafford (2009) and Andrew Luck (2012) as the other No. 1 picks to play high school football in the Lone Star State.
Texas joins Ohio with three No. 1 picks in the last 27 years, but both still trail California, which has five No. 1 selections during that span.
The Golden State added to its total in 2016 when the St. Louis-now-Los Angeles Rams made quarterback Jared Goff the first player off the board. California also had a run of QBs in the early 2000s with David Carr (2002), Carson Palmer (2003) and Alex Smith (2005). Keyshawn Johnson was the top pick in 1996.
Ohio's trove of top picks includes Dan Wilkinson and Ki-Jana Carter in consecutive years (1994 and 1995) and Orlando Pace in 1997.
Georgia and Florida – high school football power states – have surprisingly combined for just one No. 1 overall pick. Atlanta product Cam Newton heard his name first in 2011 but the Sunshine State has been shutout despite its status as a prospect hotbed.
