Baseball Field For Special-Needs Players Opens In Gloucester Township Saturday

The opening ceremony for the Field of Dreams is Saturday morning.

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — The Field of Dreams will open in Gloucester Township this weekend. The opening ceremony will take place at 247 Little Gloucester Road on Saturday, April 22, 11:30 a.m. The first game follows at noon.

Field of Dreams is an organized baseball league that allows children and adults with special needs to play baseball on a specially-designed field. The games are non-competitive in nature. Each player will bat, run the bases and score in each inning. Each game is 60 minutes, and ends in a tie. Over 30 players have registered.

Volunteers called “Buddies” will be assigned to each player to assist throughout the game. The Buddy will protect the players from balls and assist the players in batting and running the bases. They are also a friend on and off the field. Many players from other leagues in Gloucester Township have volunteered to be Buddies, according to township officials.

“We look forward to throwing our first pitch at Gloucester Township Field of Dreams this Saturday,” Gloucester Township Mayor David R. Mayer said in a release. “Field of Dreams is a baseball 'diamond' that is totally handicapped accessible with synthetic surface that will easily allow the use of wheelchairs and walkers. So every child and adult in our community and beyond no matter their baseball skills level has an opportunity to join in and play ball!”

“Every person in Gloucester Township and surrounding areas has now an opportunity to enjoy America’s favorite pastime,” Gloucester Township Councilman and Field of Dreams Chairperson Michael Mignone said. “We are proud to extend our free registration to not only residents of our township but to players from adjacent municipalities as well.”
