Trump signs ‘Buy American’ executive order, aggressive policy a ‘signal to the world’

When it comes to an “America-First” trade policy, Donald Trump’s position is as steadfast as it’s ever been.

And on Tuesday, in front of a blue-collar crowd at Wisconsin-based Snap-On Tools, the president signed an executive order highlighting his commitment to keeping manufacturing jobs in America.

A part of his “Buy American, Hire American” agenda, Trump told the crowd that the order “declares that the policy of our government is to aggressively promote and use American-made goods and to ensure that American labor is hired to do the job.”

By tightening the rules to ensure that H-1B visas are only granted to skilled foreign workers whose services our country actually needs, the order will prevent the importing of workers competing with ordinary Americans for entry-level jobs.

Additionally, already existing rules that bar foreign contractors from bidding on federal projects will be enforced, unlike under past administrations.

“We’re going to do everything in our power to make sure more products are stamped with those wonderful words ‘Made in the USA,’ ” Trump told the crowd, which included Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin and Secretary of Education Betsy DeVoss. “For too long we’ve watched as our factories have been closed and our jobs have been sent to faraway lands.”

It was only fitting that the speech took place in Wisconsin, the site of the first domino in a series of three Rust Belt wins that ended up giving the president a historic victory. The fact that Trump won Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania is remarkable given the long history of national Democratic victories in those states, and Trump’s fair trade agenda was no small factor.

Before signing the bill, Trump said, “The optimism in this room is the same incredible spirit that is sweeping across the country, and it’s even greater than that great day in November when I won the state of Wisconsin and we won the presidency.”

Trump was also sharply critical of the North American Free Trade Agreement, promising “very big changes” or, if that’s not possible, an end to NAFTA altogether.

“We are going to make very big changes, or we are going to get rid of NAFTA for once and for all,” Trump said. “We cannot continue like this.”

“With this order, I am directing every single agency in our government to strictly uphold our ‘Buy American’ laws,” Trump said. “This election, the American people voted to end the theft of American prosperity, they voted to bring back their jobs.”
