The Arlington boys and girls track and field teams have put a big emphasis on the distance running and throwing events this spring in an attempt to make up for the graduation of several star athletes.
On the girls side, three Eagles seniors are off to strong starts. Juliette Williams has the state’s sixth-best time in the 100-meter dash (12.46 seconds); Sidney Trinidad has the state’s 10th-best time in the 100 hurdles (15.44) and the third-best time in the 300 hurdles (46.36); and Reilly Kesselring is tied for third in the state in the high jump (5 feet, 3 inches).
“Juliette and Sidney could be top-eight placers in a number of events at state,” Arlington coach Judd Hunter said. “Reilly can be a 5-6 high jumper if she puts in concentration and focus.”
The Eagles’ boys team is more reliant on underclassmen than the girls squad, but is led by Gabriel Green, who has the state’s third-longest javelin throw (183-8). Hunter also has been pleased with the performances of sprinter Nick Lesperance and distance runner Kevin Mullin.
“Gabe loves the javelin the most, but he has to be solid in the shot put and discus down the stretch,” Hunter said. “Nick running a 11.5 in the 100 is good this time of year. He’s got a good 200 time as well. Kevin has a good time in the mile, and thinks he might run better in the two-mile. He’s stepped up to become a good point scorer for us. He’s the go-to guy for the distance runners.”
