BGSU signee helps Mattoon to record-breaking season
Bowling Green State University women's basketball signee Sierra Thompson recently completed a successful senior season at Mattoon High School. Thompson is one of five student-athletes who signed a National Letter of Intent in November of 2016.

Thompson recently wrapped up a senior campaign in which she helped her school to one of the finest seasons in program history. Thompson averaged 16.1 points and 10.9 rebounds per game in 2016-17, adding 1.5 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.9 blocked shots per outing. She shot 50.9 percent from the field and 75.3% from the free-throw line.
Thompson scored in double digits in 28 of Mattoon's 32 games in 2016-17, including seven games of 20 points or more. She had at least seven rebounds in every game, with 20 double-figure rebounding games and 19 double-doubles in her senior season. Those double-doubles included nine in the season's final 11 games.
In the process, Thompson helped the Green Wave finish 30-2, setting a new school record for wins. Mattoon won a regional title for the first time since 2004, advancing to the sectional final.
Thompson was an All-State Honorable-Mention selection, and was named the WCIA-TV 3 Player of the Year. She finished her career with 1,374 points and 1,268 rebounds in her career, and is the school's all-time rebounding leader. She averaged a double-double in each of her final three seasons with the Green Wave.
