Long Beach police cited 37 motorcyclists and 12 drivers this past weekend during a crackdown on motorcycle safety, according to a news release from the department.

On Sunday, extra officers were patrolling areas of the city where motorcyclists frequently ride and where there have been motorcycle crashes.

Officers were looking for unsafe riding as well as unsafe driving by motorists that could endanger bikers, police said.

In all, officers pulled over 63 people, according to police.

During those stops, they wrote 34 citations to motorcyclists and 10 to drivers, according to the department.

Another three motorcyclists were cited for not having the proper license, and another two drivers were cited for unlicensed driving, police said.

Police said the operation was intended to curb deaths caused by motorcycle crashes by encouraging safe riding.

Authorities said fatal motorcycle crashes in California have rebounded in recent years from a decade low of 352 in 2010.

In Long Beach, 15 people have died and 277 have been injured in motorcycle crashes in the last three years, according to police.

The crackdown was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety distributed through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
