The Planning Commission is hosting a study session on affordable housing this week, where officials will hear updates from city staff on the current state of housing in Long Beach, as well as learn what measures are being taken to preserve existing units and procure new ones.
The public is encouraged to participate in the discussion.
The study session comes on the heels of a report, published by Apartment List, that named Long Beach one of the top 10 largest U.S. cities with the steepest rent increases over the past year.
The report is not too surprising to local residents, who frequently tell stories of rising rents and gentrification in a city experiencing an economic renaissance.
The Planning Commission meeting begins at 5 p.m. Thursday, and will likely mirror one held by City Council in February, which included a report on some of the housing issues facing Long Beach, along with some proposed solutions.
