Geneva area brush fire now 90 percent contained
A large brush fire that was burning near homes in the Geneva area is now 90 percent contained.
As of Tuesday morning, the fire had burned more than 60 acres, officials said.
The fire began before noon on Monday.
Video from Chopper 2 showed the fire burning near several homes northeast of Oviedo in Seminole County.
A voluntary evacuation order was issued Monday evening for residents who live on Packard Avenue in Oviedo.
The fire moved dangerously close to several Seminole County homes.
WESH 2 News spoke to one homeowner who said his house was saved.
"It's better than it was about an hour ago," Roger Butcher said.
Butcher built what he calls his "wooden home in the woods" 30 years ago. He noticed the smoke from his front porch on Monday.
"We went out around on the golf cart to see what might be happening, and turned out there was a big fire coming right at us," Butcher said.
The fire was threatening eight houses near Black Hammock Wilderness Preserve.
Firefighters moved dirt and water to try to stop the blaze.
Friends helped Butcher drag hoses to keep the roof wet.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, but officials said it was likely a small fire from Sunday that had rekindled.
The Florida Forest Service reported 25 percent containment around 7 p.m.
Crews will remain at the scene overnight to monitor the situation. Seminole County Fire crews are expected to continue fighting the fire Tuesday morning.
