Heavy rain and flood warning for Southern PNG

People in the Southern Region of Papua New Guinea have been warned of heavy rain and flooding.

The warning was issued today by the Port Moresby Warning Centre (PMWC) for provinces in the Southern Region including Milne Bay, Oro and some parts of Central.

The PMWC reports that there will be heavy rain, showers and occasional thunderstorms associated with the monsoon trough to be experienced for the next couple of days.

The coastal areas will be greatly affected by the heavy rain and occasional thunderstorms.

Heavy rains are forecasted to occur and persist over these areas causing flooding and landslides.

All affected communities are urged to take the necessary precautions.

PNG National Weather Service assistant director Jimmy Gomoga says people should be wary of these warnings issued every time and adhere to these warnings to avoid being caught up in floods or storms.

Gomoga said those on land should not go out to the forest in case of trees falling on them or avoid going outdoors to avoid powerlines falling on them and in terms of flooding, people should be wary about landslides.

Gomoga said previously that there’s higher rainfall in March so flooding can be expected.
