A 72-year-old German who was a resident of Austria has died following a sudden illness while he was on a visit to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress this evening, Police said.
They said the victim Derrick Monter had visited Sigiriya with a Sri Lankan couple working in Austria.
The foreigner had fainted inside the cave containing the Sigiriya Frescos and died after admission to the Kimbissa Divisional Hospital.
The body is lying at the Sigiriya Hospital mortuary and the postmortem examination is to be conducted tomorrow(18).
Sigiriya Police are conducting further investigations.
