The Limit Does Not Exist: Kate Fehlhaber Puts Neuroscience In Focus

This article is more than 7 years old.

Listen to the full episode here:

Kate Fehlhaber, this week's guest on The Limit Does Not Exist, is a neuroscientist, photographer, pianist, and science communicator, who beautifully articulates her multiple interests on her website. She writes, "For much of my life, I have felt that I have been walking on a tightrope, balancing art on one side and science on the other." Since our show is all about walking that tightrope, we knew Fehlhaber would be a perfect guest. Some other bonus facts: Fehlhaber and I went to the same high school (shout out to Saint Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco!), and she just completed her PhD in Neuroscience at UCLA the week before we taped the show.

Fehlhaber breaks down her neuroscience work for us and describes the connections between her love of photography and her particular area of research, which focuses on what happens at the first synapse of sight. Fehlhaber also tells us about her growing body of work in the area of illuminating neuroscience and making it accessible, particularly with her award-winning website Knowing Neurons, which she heads up with a team of up-and-coming neuroscientists.

We also talk about the concept of illusory superiority and the Dunning Kreuger effect, and Fehlhaber weighs in on why the left brain/right brain myth persists in pop culture, something that Christina tackled in her TEDx talk, "The Future Belongs To Human Venn Diagrams."
