A Woodland man and three teens were arrested late Saturday night on suspicion of stealing a vehicle in the city.

Woodland Police Sgt. Ted Ruiz reported a family member on Monterey Court told Yolo County dispatchers that his elderly mother’s vehicle had been stolen around 11:30 p.m.

Ruiz stated that the family member thought the grandson of the woman was responsible for the theft. That person was identified as Daniel Rice, 18, of Woodland.

Ruiz noted that after providing information on the stolen vehicle, the person who made the report was on the east side of Woodland when he spotted the vehicle in the area of County Road 102 and East Main Street. The person followed the vehicle and called police. Police responded. The missing vehicle was briefly lost but located by police, unoccupied, in the 400 block of Aspen Street.

“A person who was present where the vehicle was abandoned saw several subjects flee from the vehicle on foot,” Ruiz sated. “Deputies from the Yolo County Sheriff’s Department responded and assisted in setting up a perimeter. A California Highway Patrol Air Unit also responded to assist in the search.”

One suspect was located by an officer on the ground and surrendered, Ruiz stated. The three other suspects were hiding in the area and located by the CHP Air Unit. The three suspects surrendered to officers and a K-9 unit on the ground without incident. One of the captured suspects was identified as Daniel Rice.

During a search of the stolen vehicle, officers also found items that had apparently been stolen from the residence during the initial theft of the vehicle.

Rice was booked at the Yolo County Jail on suspicion of vehicle theft, burglary, and possession of stolen property. Three juveniles from Woodland, ages 16, 17 and 17, were booked at the Yolo County Juvenile Hall, on suspicion of conspiracy to possess a stolen vehicle.
