The Guerrero family have an established history in the world of professional wrestling. Gory Guerrero was a Lucha Libre wrestler in the early 20th century when the majority of contenders in the sport were imported from Mexico.
'Lucha Libre,' literally meaning 'free fight,' was developed in Mexico with Gory's generation and described the form of entertainment they portrayed in the 'act of combat'.
Chavo and his brothers Eddie, Mando and Hector began wrestling in their home town of El Paso, Texas at shows that their father promoted, before eventually making it to the big times.
Chavo's youngest brother Eddie passed away in 2005 from heart failure.
