The Everett girls basketball team fell one win short of qualifying for a 3A District 1 play-in game this season, but there’s a sense of optimism surrounding the Seagulls. That’s because coach Luther Weathersby is focusing on a big-picture approach to building the program, and he likes what he sees if that picture develops like he thinks it can.
“It starts with the young kids,” Weathersby said. “I put a lot of time into our feeder program — I make it to games, watch practices, get coaches to run what we run. And our seventh-grade team was pretty good. When that group gets here, that’s when I see us turning the corner. Right now we’re trying to lay the groundwork. We’re building a booster club, and we’ve got some great parents involved with that. We want to provide the kids with a first-class program they can feel good about.”
Several of Everett’s younger players, such as sophomores Brooklyn Johnson and Morgan Carter, received significant playing time this season, and Weathersby was happy with their development. He also praised the play of junior post Kate Pohland, who averaged 19 points and 12.5 rebounds per game.
“The younger girls really bought into the program,” Weathersby said. “They have strong basketball IQs.”
