Here are five local prep events to keep an eye on this week:
1. Girls basketball: Stanwood vs Lynnwood (at Mountlake Terrace H.S.), 7:45 p.m. Tuesday. Stanwood has rebounded from a midseason slump, but the Spartans know they’ll have to play at the top of their game in order to beat the Royals and move on to the 3A District 1 title game.
2. Boys basketball: Squalicum vs. Shorecrest (at Jackson H.S.), 6 p.m. Wednesday. Shorecrest takes on the 3A District 1 tournament’s only Northwest Conference entrant. Squalicum should pose a tough challenge — the Storm tied for second in their conference, posting a 17-3 overall record.
3. Girls basketball: Lake Stevens vs. Glacier Peak (at Everett Community College), 6:15 p.m. Thursday. The winner of this 4A District 1 title game clinches a berth in the state regionals. Lake Stevens is a very good team, but the Vikings haven’t come close to beating the Grizzlies this year, losing their two regular-season games by a combined 33 points.
4. Boys basketball: Monroe vs. Glacier Peak (at Everett Community College), 8 p.m. Thursday. Monroe beat Cascade and Kamiak on back-to-back nights last weekend, with the win over the Knights coming in overtime. Will the Bearcat players have fresh legs for this 4A District 1 championship game?
5. Wrestling: Mat Classic XXIX (at Tacoma Dome), Friday-Saturday. How many state championships will local wrestlers bring home? Here are two names to watch out for — Gavin Rork of Arlington (boys) and Joessie Gonzales of Snohomish (girls).
