Samsung’s investigation finds two separate battery issues in Note 7 caused explosions

theAfter in -depth investigation of several weeks, now Samsung has announced the cause of Galaxy Note7 explosion incidents. It found that there were two separate issues in two type of battery used in the initial lot and then replacement lot.

Samsung has published an infographic to explain the matter. Dong-jin Koh, Samsung’s mobile business chief, also acknowledged two separate instances and apologized to customers and suppliers.

The Galaxy Note 7 smartphones were packed with the Li-ion battery that is arranged in three layers: a positive electrode, a negative one, and a third physical layer three layers: a positive electrode, a negative one and a third physical layer that acts as the separator between the first two. If the first and second layers touch, it can lead to short circuits.

The first set of battery shipped initially had the issue with the upper right-hand corner of the battery cell. Koh also explained that the incorrect positioning of the negative electrode tip also led to a higher likelihood of incidents.

For the second set of battery that was supplied by the different manufacturer for the replacement, units had melted copper on the negative electrode area. There was a melting issue that led to contact between the positive and negative layers.

Samsung hired 700 engineers to test 200,000 Galaxy Note 7 devices and also took help of consulting firm Exponent and German technical services provider TUV Rheinland to probe the issue. Finally, Samsung has something technical to explain as the possible cause of the Note 7 explosion.
