Bill and Hillary Clinton shared a painfully awkward moment at Donald Trump’s inauguration on Friday.
News cameras scanning the audience of dignitaries gathered ahead of Trump’s swearing in ceremony caught Bill, mouth agape, starting longingly at something — or someone.
The exchange occurred just after Michelle Obama appeared at the event, which was held at the west front of the U.S. Capitol building.
The former president is seen biting his bottom lip as he continues his gaze. He mutters something.
A watchful Hillary then turns her head and pauses on Bill for several gut-wrenching seconds. Realizing that his wife was watching, Bill casts his eyes slightly towards her. Hillary then turns her head away with a look of displeasure on her face.
A Twitter user who spotted the exchange speculated that Bill was staring at Ivanka Trump. Though she was seated in the direction of Clinton’s gaze, it’s impossible to tell if the former president was staring at Trump’s eldest daughter.
