New owner for Palmers Scaffolding

20 Jan 17 Palmers Scaffolding has been bought out of German ownership by Chester-based businessman Colin Butt, whose other interests include NSS Special Access.

Palmers is said to be the UK’s oldest scaffolding contractor, having been formed in 1880 by Edwin Palmer.

As a subsidiary of Xervon GmbH, Xervon Palmers Ltd had been a part of the Remondis Group since 2011. Xervon, a German company, had been looking to sell Palmers because of the UK’s vote to leave the European Union, according to a news release issued by what is now Palmers Scaffolding UK Limited.

Palmers Scaffolding UK employs 300 staff and consistently ranks in the top 10 of UK scaffolding contractors. Its 2016 turnover was £15.3m.

Colin Butt has five decades of experience in scaffolding, with companies including SGB and NSG. He now takes the role of CEO at Palmers, although the rest of the management team is unchanged, with Donald Morrison as managing director supported by directors Lindsay Harle and Ian McFarlane.

Colin Butt said: “We are thrilled to be the proud new owners of such an historic brand as Palmers – who continue to operate at the highest level of special access provision, have a highly skilled workforce. They have established excellent, pre-qualified working relationships with some of the country’s leading contractors and we are looking forward to moving the brand forward in 2017 and beyond and working on some of the biggest, most important projects in Britain in coming years.”

Donald Morrison added: “With Colin Butt’s vast experience in the special access sector, his connections, enthusiasm and entrepreneurial skill set, it can only mean greater success for Palmers in the future.”
